Producer: Shannon Childress
Label: Independent

I first met the Childress Family in the mid 1970’s. I fell in love with their family harmonies and a wonderful family from Madisonville, KY. They still are singing and writing some great songs and the tight family harmonies are still there.

Shannon Childress and Greg Boyer have written the title cut of the project, “Spreading the Legacy”. This ballad reminds me a little of a Talley Trio type song. It is a more progressive Southern Gospel song and is done very well. “Carpet of Red” is a great ballad, written by mom, Marlene Childress and daughter, Teresa Childress Lutz. The ballad is done with some nice, smooth unison work and then continues to build into a great power ballad that compares the blood of Jesus to a red carpet that welcomes us all to Heaven if we believe.

Marlene and Teresa join forces again to write “Oh, How Amazing is Amazing Grace”. This song picks the tempo up and is more traditional Southern Gospel song. This is the type song that the Childress Family has been known for over the years. This song reminds me of some of the songs that the Cathedrals were famous for during their rise to the top. Courtney Lutz is featured on “I Desire”. At 17 years of age, she represents a third generation of this family. This tune is sung very well. The style is more contemporary, written by Natalie Grant, Bernie Herms and Cindy Morgan.

Shannon and Greg Boyer have written another song for the project, “Each Drop of Blood”. Jamey Lutz takes the lead vocals on this mid tempo tune. This song reminds me of something that the original Talleys might have done. Jamey has a strong lead voice and sings the song very well. They have included the late Dottie Rambo’s classic song, “For What Earthly Reason”. Carla Childress is featured on this great song. They stay true to the original arrangement and have some wonderful harmony on this power ballad.

Courtney is once again featured on the Albert Brumley classic, “I’ll Fly Away. They have put together a bluesy arrangement on this old song, modernizing it. Teresa and Marlene have written a pretty ballad, “In My Father’s House”. Marlene is featured on this song.

They have included a Squire Parsons song on the project, “Wonderful Time in Heaven”. This song picks the tempo up and once again takes me back to the style of song that I remember the Childress Family for. This song has some great modern harmonies and is one of those songs that just find you swept away. Courtney changes the pace once again to a driving CCM style song, “Just a Little Bit More”. This song has a strong beat and mixes a little bit of Pop and Jazz. Courtney does a great job singing this style of song.

“I’ve got that Old Time Religion in My Heart” is an instrumental that shows off another facet of the Childress Family. This song features some great piano work. They have chosen a pretty ballad to close the project, “Who Is He in Yonder Stall”. This song features some strong ensemble work and the harmonies are smooth.

The Childress Family has produced a project that is full of variety and great singing. They continue a legacy of great Southern Gospel music that they started many years ago. This is not just another regional group. It doesn’t get much better than this.

I was honored to have recorded this project for the Childress Family. They are wonderful people of God, and their talent is second to none. I agree with the above comment "it doesn't get much better than this". Not only are they great singers and musicians, they are also great friends. There is not a mixed group on the planet any better than the Childress Family.
